Chang'an University, directly
under the Ministry of Education, is one of the first universities selected for
the "211 Project," a national "985 Advantage Discipline
Innovation Platform," and a national "Double First-Class" university.
Founded at a time when China was in its infancy, the university grew during the
tide of reform and flourished amidst the tide of higher education, forging a
path that has aligned with the People's Republic for over seventy years. Since
1951, its predecessors, Xi'an University of Highways and Transportation, Xi'an
Institute of Engineering, and Northwest Institute of Architecture and Civil
Engineering, have been established. The university began admitting
international students in 1956, enrolled master's students in 1978, and doctoral
students in 1983. In 1997, the university became a key university selected for
the "211 Project." In 2000, the three universities merged to form
Chang'an University, marking a new chapter in the university's remarkable
development.
Since 2005, the Ministry of
Education has signed agreements with the Ministry of Transport (now the
Ministry of Transportation), the Shaanxi Provincial People's Government, the
Ministry of Land and Resources (now the Ministry of Natural Resources), and the
Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development to jointly develop Chang'an
University. This formalized the "four ministries and one province"
collaborative development model for Chang'an University. In 2011, Chang'an
University was selected as a national "985 Advantage Discipline Innovation
Platform" university. In 2017, it was selected for the first round of
national "Double First-Class" university construction. In 2021, it
officially became a pilot institution for the "Strong Transportation
Nation" initiative. In 2022, it was selected for the second round of
national "Double First-Class" university construction, embarking on a
new journey of high-quality development.
Located in the historic and
cultural city of Xi'an, the university boasts two major campuses, north and
south, nestled against the Big Wild Goose Pagoda in the south and bordering the
Wei River in the north. The university boasts three teaching and practice
bases: Taibai Mountain, Liangshan Mountain, and the Wei River. The campus
covers an area of 3,745 mu (approximately 1,000 acres). The university
strives to cultivate a charming campus characterized by humanity, innovation,
wisdom, greenery, and peace. The campus is shaded by trees, offers beautiful
scenery, and boasts comprehensive facilities. Students from over 31 provinces,
municipalities, and autonomous regions across China, as well as Hong Kong,
Macao, and Taiwan, representing over 40 ethnic groups and representing over 100
countries worldwide, immerse themselves in learning and pursuing their dreams
on this diverse and international campus.
The school adheres to the
socialist direction of running schools, closely follows the fundamental task of
cultivating morality and educating people, and upholds the discipline
development concept of "reaching the pinnacle of engineering, revitalizing
science, prospering liberal arts, and cross-disciplinary breakthroughs".
It shoulders the lofty mission of being "a cradle for talent cultivation,
a hall for scientific research, a base for social services, a highland for
cultural inheritance and innovation, and a forefront for international
exchanges and cooperation". It adheres to the goal and vision of "a
distinctive, internationally renowned, high-level research university" and
becomes an important base for high-level talent cultivation, high-level
scientific research, and high-quality social services in my country's three
major industry fields of transportation, land resources, and urban and rural
construction.
The university currently offers
13 first-level doctoral programs, four doctoral professional degree programs,
34 first-level master's programs, and 21 master's professional degree programs.
It also has nine postdoctoral research centers. Seven disciplines, including
engineering, earth sciences, materials science, environmental science and
ecology, general social sciences, chemistry, and computer science, are ranked
in the top 1% globally by ESI. Engineering is ranked in the top 1‰ globally,
and three, including environmental science and ecology, materials science, and
earth science, are ranked in the top 3‰ globally. The university currently
offers 84 undergraduate programs, 50 of which have been selected as national or
provincial first-class undergraduate program construction sites under the
"Double 10,000 Plan," and 27 programs have passed the National
Engineering Education Certification. The university is consistently ranked
among the top 100 universities in China, with its civil engineering and
transportation disciplines ranked 8th among US News Global Universities. It is
known as the "Whampoa Military Academy" for road transportation
talent training and a "golden business card" for scientific and
technological innovation.
The university boasts 25 colleges
(departments, and centers) covering 11 disciplines, including philosophy,
economics, law, literature, science, engineering, management, education,
agriculture, art, and interdisciplinary studies. The university offers a comprehensive
degree-granting system encompassing bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees.
In response to the nation's strategic needs in the new era, the university has
established a number of physical research institutes, including the Modern
Transportation Research Institute, the Qinling Ecological Environment Research
Institute, the Yellow River Research Institute, the Sichuan-Tibet Railway
Engineering Research Institute, and the Xiong'an Modern Industry Research
Institute. The university boasts three academicians of the Chinese Academy of
Sciences, the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and the Singapore Academy of
Engineering, over 1,400 professors and associate professors, 505 doctoral
supervisors, and 1,614 master's supervisors. The university boasts over 100
outstanding individuals undertaking key national R&D programs and major
national engineering projects. The university currently enrolls over 25,000
full-time undergraduates, over 12,000 doctoral and master's students, and over
